Grayson County is located in beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwestern Virginia.
In the Blue Ridge Highlands of Virginia, Grayson County is the perfect vacation getaway. Located in the middle of the Appalachian mountain chain this vacation spot is close to metropolitan areas on the East Coast. Ideal weather combined with the highest mountains in Virginia (Mt. Rogers at 5,729' and Whitetop Mountain at 5,520') the New River and countless acres of public lands make Grayson County a popular destination to beat the heat and rest and relax with friends and family. Independence, VirginiaThe Town of Independence came into being in 1850 as the settlement of a dispute about where to locate the county seat. At that time, a controversy arose between the people of Old Town and people of the Elk Creek area. Each group wanted the County seat in its area. The final decision, made by three commissioners from adjacent counties, was to locate on the site favored by a group of "independents" and to call the town Independence.
Independence is located 15 miles west of Galax, 40 miles east of Marion, 29 miles south of Wytheville, and 10 miles north of Sparta, North Carolina. Elk Creek, VirginiaElk Creek is located in Grayson County and home to a local dragstrip known as Elk Creek Dragway.
